It was a storm of a different kind that we all had to navigate recently. One of the names we heard given to this time is “The Great Pause.” We may be partial to that one because it puts a couple of months of stay-at-home into perspective. While we feel for those who have been hit hard, we are grateful at the same time for conditions here in the Lowcountry.
Mary Ann and the team and I just wanted you to know that all is well here. Client contact is mostly by phone and computer just now – but we’re in the office if you need us. Home building got started again a bit quicker than some other businesses, because it’s possible to do most things without a lot of close contact. We are fortunate to have our valued subcontractors working alongside us again, too.
Here’s another thing we might pass along. The local real estate market has remained strong. We have seen a lot of visitors in the area, as well as part time residents who chose to “shelter-in-place” here. And we are hearing from them that they want to enjoy the life they looked forward to, sooner rather than later.
One sign of this is that that new home searches were up 50% year-over-year, when Zillow reported at the end of May. It may be that this “time-out” allowed people the opportunity to give some thought and do their research about available options for their dream home. This weighs in favor of the lasting value of building a home here, around what has been called “America’s best island.”
Interest rates could hardly get lower, which is certainly a motivating factor. And that would take the sting out of any increases we might expect in materials and transportation costs, as things get moving again. We will do our best to keep you posted on that.
Bottom line is at Tom Peeples Builder, we are still on the job, and we’re dedicated to the finest in craftsmanship, service, and integrity. We all work hard to live up to our motto: “We Make Building a Pleasure.”
