You get a feel for what to keep an eye on when you’ve been in the same line of work for over 40 years. Seeing good times and tough times, and the differences between them, you learn to see when things can be put together to come out better.
Mary Ann and I see one of those times shaping up now. The two things that come together to make this picture are interest rates and materials costs.
Last week the Wall Street Journal (as well as most of the media) published that the 30-year mortgage rate hit an all-time low. (Read WSJ article here.) That, of course, creates an unprecedented opportunity if you are considering building or remodeling a property.
But on the flip side, in our day-to-day work we are seeing a good deal more competition for building materials. We’ve always tried to source as much of our material as close to home as we could, but lately, other firms that didn’t hesitate to get materials overseas are taking a closer look at sourcing closer to home.
With so many others waking up to it now, we expect more pressure on the materials supply for as far ahead as we can see. The result, unfortunately, is higher prices and longer lead times.
The Opportune Time is Now
All of this comes together to look like now is an opportune time to build the home you’ve had in mind or remodel your existing property. If you had plans to get started in the next year or two, you might want to reconsider your timetable as the Lowcountry still looks like the place to be, and with Hilton Head Island regularly being recognized as one of America’s favorite islands, the value of your home into the future, which was always strong, seems like as good an idea as ever.
Another lesson from these times is, “why wait?” Enjoying the home you’ve imagined, for yourself, your family, and your loved ones, is something you don’t want to put off.
It would be our pleasure to help you bring that idea to life. At Tom Peeples Builder, we’re dedicated to the finest in craftsmanship, service, and integrity. We all work hard to live up to our motto: “We Make Building a Pleasure.” Check out our website at TomPeeplesBuilder.com, where you’ll find lots of ideas for building in the Lowcountry, or give us a call at 843-681-2600 and let’s talk over what you’d like to do.
